Third Workshop on Post-Editing Technical Translations in Indian Languages



Introduction

The Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH) is pleased to announce the third workshop for translators and post-editors working on translating from English into the following Indian languages: Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia.

This third workshop has been streamlined to incorporate the learning and outcomes of the first and second PETIL workshops held between July 15-21, 2020 and November 2-4, 2020.

This workshop aims to introduce translators/post-editors to modern day translation technologies (Machine Translation, Translation Workbench) and processes (Post Editing, Quality Reviews) and their use in translating technical content into Indian Languages. The workshop will be task driven and introduce you to the following:

  • Translation Technology (Tools and Processes)
  • Introduction to Domain and Terminology
  • Guidelines for Post-Editing Machine Translation
  • Guidelines for Reviewing Translation Quality

Program Structure

This is a 4 day online workshop with extensive hands-on practice sessions. The workshop is limited to 25 participants to enable better interaction between speakers and participants. The Lecture sessions will be of around 1.5 hours duration and will typically be the first session each morning, followed by hands-on online labs under the supervision of technical and translation experts. All participants must plan to be present for all the sessions and complete their lab exercises in time to successfully complete the workshop program and qualify for a participation certificate.

Tentative Schedule

Following is a tentative calendar for planned sessions and discussion topics. Note that some speakers and sessions might move around considering availability and other logistical constraints. The schedule will be updated if any changes are made.

How to Apply?

Who is this for?


This workshop is limited to translators and post-editors working from English into the following languages: Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, and Odia.

  • The workshop will be hands-on, so you must be comfortable using your system (laptop/desktop) to translate text into your target language and must have the appropriate set up to type in and edit in your language on your system.
  • Translation exercises will be geared towards working with Machine Translation output in the above languages. While previous experience in post-editing machine translation output is not mandatory, but some experience of translating technical content professionally is preferable.
  • Kindly go through the proposed tentative schedule above to gauge the amount of time you will need to dedicate to this before applying.


What you will need?


  • You must possess a working internet connection with the Chrome browser installed on a Laptop or a Desktop computer to be able to participate in this workshop.
  • The workshop will be conducted over Microsoft Teams. Although, you don’t need to download and install the app to join the sessions (you can join through the browser), however, it is recommended that you try out the app in advance: https://www.microsoft.com/en-in/microsoft-365/microsoft-teams/download-app
  • It is also recommended that you have a headset with mic and headphones to enable better class participation.
